Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Q & A

What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a substance in your blood that carries healing growth factors. By isolating PRP, Dr. Rudnick can inject it back into your body to accelerate the healing process.

PRP injections are safe, minimally invasive, and require no downtime for most patients. Dr. Rudnick may recommend PRP to supplement an existing treatment plan. Over time, it stimulates healing and tissue regeneration.

How does platelet-rich plasma (PRP) work?

When you arrive for your PRP appointment, Dr. Rudnick draws your blood. Next, he runs your blood through a centrifuge to separate the PRP from other materials, such as white blood cells and platelet-poor plasma.

Once he isolates the PRP, he injects these concentrated platelets back into your area of concern. The procedure only takes about 30 minutes.

What can platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treat?

Dr. Rudnick may recommend PRP injections to treat:

Alopecia (hair loss)

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease that causes your hair to fall out. Other factors that contribute to hair loss include aging, inherited male-pattern baldness, and hormonal changes.

PRP injections may help stimulate new hair growth for fuller, thicker hair without surgery or synthetic medications.

Photoaging

Photoaging refers to cellular damage that develops in your skin from deep within the dermis. As collagen and cell regeneration start to deplete, aging symptoms such as brown spots, hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, and laxity begin to develop in the skin. PRP therapy can help stimulate collagen and accelerate the natural healing process for more youthful skin.

Slow-healing wounds

Tissue regeneration is one of the most prominent benefits of PRP therapy. If you have a chronic condition that slows your healing process, like diabetes, PRP therapy can help repair damage to prevent complications.

How many platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments will I need?

Most patients need at least three treatments, spaced about 2-3 weeks apart, to achieve optimal results. You may notice visible improvements within just 4-6 weeks*, and your results can last for up to a year or more*. You can return to Dazzling Dermatology for maintenance treatments once your results start to fade.
